I just heard the news

Last weekend my parents came down to visit! They must not have wanted to get too used to nice weather because they came down on the most unusually cold week of the year (maybe ever – a dusting of snow greeted them when they arrived and, aside from a couple days over the weekend, the temperatures were in the 30s and 40s – burrr!) Friday night we went out to dinner at the Hopdoddy – a newer burger place on SoCo where they grind their own meat and bake their own buns. Everyone liked their burgers and hand cut fries and I loooved my veggie burger (I think I finally found a veggie burger that makes me as happy as the one from a cafe on Crystal Beach).

On Saturday, we went for a walk downtown while the weather was nice. We got cookies from Walton’s to start us off, took my parents down 6th street, then stopped for and Orangina and Ginger Beer on our way to the capitol. Then we headed out to Canyon Lake to go to a place called Frank’s Bait and Taco for dinner. We saw it on an episode of “The Daytripper” and it’s a bait shop and a restaurant run by a guy named Eddie and his wife is the cook. There was no one there when we got there but the place was full of chotchkies on the walls and hanging from the ceilings – very eclectic and Eddie shared with us some of the stories behind the stuff. He has something from almost everywhere but nothing from Buffalo – so my parents promised to send him something when they got home. Eddie was so friendly and the food was fantastic!

Sunday we watched the Superbowl and the rest of the week my mom and I went shopping!! And I got lots of yummy treats for being such a good lil shopper – including Tagalongs and Samoas (which are now called Peanut Butter Patties and Caramel deLites and slightly smaller than all of us remember).

Speaking of Girl Scouts, a couple weeks ago we went to the grocery store where the girl scouts have been setting up shop for the last couple weeks in the vestibule. They usually catch us on the way out but this time they asked us as we were walking in if we would buy their last box of girl scout cookies. We said no and I felt kinda bad thinking back to my days of sprooking at Wegmans when I just wanted to be done but no one would take my samples so I had to stay at my station and wait. So, we grabbed a few things and about 15 minutes later we were walking out and what did we see? About 20 boxes of cookies perfectly lined up on the table in all 6 brightly colored packages. Isn’t there supposed to something called scouts honor??

Also a couple of weeks ago, we went to Bed Bath & Beyond and I swiped my card but it got declined so Rich used his and while we were walking to the car, he nonchalantly asked me if I had ordered any flowers. No…why? He said that he noticed two transactions for flowers on my bank account and then he showed me there they were – Fast Flowers – one for $124 and another for $88! He didn’t want to say anything in case I was planning a surprise but the only surprise was that someone has my card – again! This time, from Australia. I wonder what they ordered and who they are for…I hope it’s something nice and more creative than roses – like a bouquet of Valentine’s day tulips! (hehe)

Lately, we have been cooking dinner together on the weekends. It all started with an episode of America’s Test Kitchen and a man in a bow tie making empanadas. They looked good, so we decided to make them for dinner and we did such a great job that we watched another episode the next week and made another dinner – Easier Fried Chicken which really was pretty easy and very tasty. And then the next weekend, we made Indoor Pulled Pork which took longer than we anticipated (we thought it took 2 hours but that was just the first step) but it was well worth the wait and made for a nice midnight snack and even better the next day (and the day after that – we’re a lil porked out from porking out on pork now). And this weekend, we made a chicken pot pie that my dad would have absolutely loved! (jk) Everything has turned out really well – except for my attempt to make homemade rolls. I thought it would be easy but as you can see from the picture, it did not go well…

19 more days until the final installment of our nuptials! Happy Valentine’s Day! xoxo Bethie, Rich and…
